Reliable & Ready
We're building tomorrow's grid today – one that will power New York's energy transition while maintaining the reliability our customers expect and deserve.
Orange & Rockland is ready for every season. We are one of the most reliable energy providers in the Northeast. Over the last decade, the Company has invested over $2 billion into our energy grid, making our systems more reliable and resilient in the face of increased severe weather events.
We’re energizing the Hudson Valley, and our service territory is a vital connector between New York City, Upstate, and the broader Tri-State region. Our service area covers 1,300 square miles, and we provide reliable energy to nearly one million people, hundreds of small and large businesses, and local summer destinations for all New Yorkers. Our year-round preparations allow us to continue modernizing critical infrastructure, support local economic growth, and create jobs across our region.
Our strategic investments support:
Longer heat waves and destructive storms are happening more than ever. Targeted infrastructure upgrades guided by the latest climate research help us keep our systems strong, so your energy stays on.
We’re supporting New York's energy transition by prioritizing equitable access to reliable, renewable energy for all of our customers.
This summer, we’ve invested $315 million into our energy system, making strategic investments to maintain and strengthen our grid against major storms and heat waves.
Our Climate Change Resilience Plan has allowed O&R to invest in all communities, particularly those most vulnerable to extreme weather events. Our projects ensure reliable service when our customers need it most.
Here’s how we’re getting it done:
- Enhancing overhead systems
- Undergrounding electric cable at strategic locations
- Automating select circuits and building additional circuits
- Expanding smart grid technology
- Extensive tree-trimming efforts
Significant projects completed in time for the summer include:
- Upgrades at the Corporate Drive Substation in Orangetown, replacing two transformers, allowing us to meet the growing electric demand in the area.
- At the Monsey Substation, we’ve replaced one transformer, providing additional electric capacity to growing communities.
- We’ve made significant upgrades to overhead lines in Wurtsboro, addressing aging infrastructure and increasing electric capacity.
Looking ahead, we’re working through the summer to ensure your future energy needs are met:
- Construction on our new Forest Avenue Substation in Monroe, and our new State School Road Substation in Warwick, began this spring and will be energized in 2027.
- Over five miles of underground transmission cable are being installed in Clarkstown to provide additional electric power to southern Rockland County by early 2027.
- An additional five miles of underground climate resilience projects throughout Rockland and Orange counties will be completed by the end of 2026.
Your energy is always there for you. We work to keep it that way.
Our engineers, line workers and emergency preparedness teams go above and beyond to ensure that your lights stay on during extreme weather conditions or are restored in a safe and timely manner. Beyond these teams, reliability extends to our entire workforce. Every employee from various departments, including Communications, Regional and Community Affairs, Customer Service, and more, all play a critical role in providing a reliable service for our customers. During extreme weather events, O&R is available 24/7 to assist our customers and community leaders.
