O&R Seeking New Sustainable Grid Support Solutions; Revised Call for Advanced Technologies to Maintain Electric Reliability in Sparkill

Orange and Rockland Utilities (O&R) is asking prospective business partners to provide proposals for innovative technology that O&R can use to relieve the peak electric demand on its Sparkill electric substation and increase the substation’s electric service reliability.

That revised Request for Proposals (RFP) specifies that the innovative technology, which could include solar panels, fuel cells, batteries, or other innovative energy solutions, would need to be able to supply about 2 megawatts/12 megawatt hours of electric load.

Another new element to the proposal would be a more targeted description of the initial location for the proposed installation. The development location is along Route 9W in Sparkill between the New York State border line north to Rockland Road.

By sharing part of the current substation’s load with another power source, O&R would enhance the electric service reliability for approximately 4,400 Orangetown customers in the villages of Nyack and Piermont and the hamlets of Sparkill and Palisades.

Rather than adding to O&R’s infrastructure, the company’s initiative leverages third-party energy solutions to meet increasing electric demand that is expected to exceed the local distribution circuits’ capacity within the next few years. O&R is taking this approach at select locations matching this qualification throughout its service area.
