O&R Offers Free Gas Operator Tech Training Course

Are you an unemployed, under-employed or dislocated worker who is looking to start over? Do you think you could get a new job if you could just get a break?

If you don’t mind getting your hands dirty, working outdoors in all kinds of weather and, if you want to feel, at the end of your shift, that you put in a good day’s work — actually accomplished something — this could be the break you need.

O&R is sponsoring a three-week long, Natural Gas Operator Technician Training Program — a hands-on, technical training course that could lead the successful student to a career with private construction companies working in the natural gas industry.

This is the seventh natural gas operator technician training class O&R has offered. Many students from the past classes are working now, making a competitive wage and starting on a new career with private construction contractors in the area.

The course is free. Enrollment is limited, so sign up now. The deadline for applications is January 15. Students must qualify for this program by attending an orientation on January 15 to take a reading and math screening test, as well as a mechanical aptitude test.

Class begins January 22.

Contact O&R’s Patty Kelly today at (845) 342-8908 or She’ll have the details and be able to answer all your questions.

The successful candidate for this program must be 18 or older and a United States citizen or must have the ability/right to work in the U.S. (Students will be required to provide proof of ability to work in the U.S. prior to program participation.) Students also must have a high school diploma or GED/HSE (High School Equivalency) and possess a valid driver’s license.

Students must commit to attend a three-week, full-time (7:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.) training program. They also must commit to taking the Northeast Gas Association exams.

The technical training will take place at the facilities of Precision Pipeline Solutions in New Windsor.

To successfully complete this course, 100 percent attendance is required.

Please note: This training prepares students for skilled natural gas industry jobs that may require heavy manual labor, including digging. That work takes place outdoors in all weather and under other challenging conditions.

O&R is offering the program to broaden the labor pool of qualified natural gas pipeline technicians being sought after by private construction contractors for the many infrastructure rehabilitation and renewal projects under way or on the drawing board. These openings are not at O&R but with the many private construction industry contractors in the area.

Each year, throughout the region, hundreds of thousands of feet of aging cast-iron and unprotected steel natural gas mains are replaced by local construction contractors with high-tech plastic mains that are more durable and provide more reliable, safer service.

The training program for Gas Operator Technician covers these topics:

  • Pipe fitting, installation and inspection of pipes
  • Specialized welding techniques
  • Leak detection and gas meter regulation
  • Accident awareness and prevention
  • Workplace competencies, communication, teamwork skills, resume writing and interview skills
  • Northeast Gas Association operator qualification testing

The training program also includes the:

  • OSHA 10 General Safety Certification program which provides training for workers on the recognition, avoidance, abatement, and prevention of safety and health hazards in the workplace and
  • Dig Safely New York’s Certified Excavator training which covers the nine elements of effective underground facilities’ damage prevention.
  • Ergonomic and injury prevention training.
  • First Aid/CPR training

A Job Fair for graduates will take place after the completion of the program to help place students in jobs.
