O&R Customers Made 2022 Another Sunny Year for Solar Energy

Company’s Update Shows Region Also Made Strides In Energy Storage, Electric Vehicles and Clean Heat.

O&R customers in 2022 made the company’s New York and New Jersey service area a cleaner, healthier place to live and work.

Approximately 30 megawatts of customer solar power were added to O&R’s electric system in 2022 – the second largest annual increase of customer solar to O&R’s electric system in the past approximately 20 years. O&R customers have now completed more than 12,000 projects with the capacity to produce nearly 213 megawatts of electricity since 2001.

Orange and Rockland Utilities, Inc. (O&R) is made up of Orange & Rockland, that provides electric and gas service in New York to Rockland, and parts of Orange and Sullivan counties, and Rockland Electric Company, that provides electric service to parts of Bergen, Passaic, and Sussex counties in New Jersey. Both companies are owned by Consolidated Edison, Inc.

O&R President and CEO Robert Sanchez said, “Our customers are the keys to our clean energy future. Their continued strong support for solar energy contributes to meeting vital environmental and sustainability goals that are essential to creating a viable future for us, for our children, and for generations to come.”

This information and more is available in O&R’s Clean Energy Update, which provides a running account of the region’s progress toward a clean energy future. The company updates the information each quarter.

The solar panels customers installed in 2022 are the equivalent of taking nearly 3,400 cars off the road in terms of greenhouse gas emissions avoided.

O&R wants to build on its success in helping customers complete solar projects by owning large-scale solar generation projects in New York State. The company would like state approval for ownership of these projects because O&R can operate them more efficiently than private developers, meaning customers would save money.

O&R and its customers made gains in the adoption of other clean energy technologies in 2022, according to the update:

O&R encourages its customers to consider whether Installing Solar Energy | Orange & Rockland (oru.com) is right for them and tries to make the interconnection process as easy and quick as possible.

By generating their own electricity and using less fossil fuel-generated power, customers prevent greenhouse gas emissions.

Increasing the use of solar energy – and the other technologies covered in the Clean Energy Update – is consistent with Con Edison’s Clean Energy Commitment.

The company is seeking to build a grid that can deliver 100 percent clean energy by 2040. O&R is also moving away from natural gas. But the company continues to invest in its gas system to keep it safe while the transition away from fossil fuels continues.
