El Diario Salutes O&R's Labor Relations Director Ivanyla Vargas

Orange and Rockland Utilities, Inc’s Director of Labor Relations Ivanyla (Vany) Vargas has been honored by El Diario as one of the publication’s outstanding women of the year.

Outstanding Women (Muejeres Destacadas) is El Diario’s unique annual celebration created to tell the stories of success and achievement by Latina women that can inspire and encourage young Latinas in their lives and careers. This celebration embraces the legacy of El Diario’s respected and recognized brand to honor and salute these extraordinary women.

The El Diario Editorial Board selects the honorees from nominations made by the Latin community. The main criteria for selection are that the candidate must be successful in her chosen field and should display a proven commitment to the community to pay back and help others to achieve success as well.

Carmen Villavicencio, Executive Editor of El Diario, said, “Under the name Mujeres Destacadas (Outstanding Women), this newspaper has been recognizing for 25 years the trajectory of activists, artists, leaders, entrepreneurs, doctors, teachers, scientists, journalists, and more. We believe that their stories of struggle to reach the positions in which they serve today are an example and inspiration to the next generations.”

Vargas has been an attorney for over 25 years, specializing in labor and employment law matters. She joined Con Edison as a Labor Relations Administrator in 2005 and continued to hold a number of positions of increasing responsibility at Con Edison.

Today, as the Director, Labor Relations at O&R, a Con Edison subsidiary, she works with I.B.E.W. Local 503, to facilitate a productive working relationship between management and its workforce and assures compliance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement and related laws.

Vargas is engaged in a number of charitable pursuits including the Puerto Rican Family Institute and sits on the board of directors of the Hope for Families and Children Foundation.

O&R President and CEO Robert Sanchez said, “Vany is a highly skilled negotiator who represents her client’s point of view powerfully, persuasively and effectively. Vany is a consummate professional who loves giving back to her community.”

Prior to joining Con Edison, Vargas worked as an Assistant General Counsel at Cabrini Medical Center, and also worked as an associate practicing corporate labor and employment law, where she represented numerous Fortune 500 companies, including Pepsico, McDonalds and Wal-Mart.

Vargas lives in North Bergen, NJ. She holds a Juris Doctor degree from Marquette University School of Law and a bachelor’s degree in Sociology and Criminal Law from Marquette University.
