O&R's Seeking New Sustainable Grid Support Solutions for Sparkill

Orange and Rockland (O&R) is asking prospective business partners to provide proposals for innovative technology that O&R can use to relieve the peak electric demand on its Sparkill substation and increase the substation’s electric service reliability.

That innovative technology, which could include solar panels, fuel cells, batteries, or other innovative energy solutions, would need to be able to pick up about 2 megawatts of electric load. By shifting that load to another power source, O&R would enhance the electric service reliability for approximately 4,400 customers in the villages of Nyack and Piermont and the hamlets of Sparkill and Palisades.

This project will permit O&R to defer a multi-million-dollar upgrade of the Sparkill substation.

Rather than adding to O&R’s infrastructure, the company’s initiative leverages third-party energy solutions to meet increasing electric demand that is expected to exceed the local distribution circuits’ capacity within the next few years. O&R is taking this approach at select locations matching this qualification throughout its service area.

“New technologies give us new opportunities,” said O&R Vice President – Operations Orville Cocking, “to build a more resilient energy system and help our customers make more informed energy choices.”
