O&R Upgrades Outage Map with Improved Information, Graphics

Orange and Rockland Utilities, Inc. (O&R) today initiated a number of Outage Map improvements designed to provide its New York and New Jersey customers with more detailed information than ever before about the impact that storm-related electric service interruptions have on the company’s electric system and its customers. The upgraded O&R Outage map can be viewed here.

The Outage Map is an online electronic map of the O&R service territory that marks the location of individual power outages with color-coded icons. Those symbols’ colors reflect the range of numbers of customers within each outage. The Outage Map also provides estimated restoration times (ERTs)for outages.

Here are just some of the benefits the redesigned Outage Map offers customers:

  • A search function that can show customers the exact address they are checking on at the premise level and the ability to bookmark that address.
  • More detailed outage information that slides into view when you click on an outage.
  • Larger, bolder fonts that make it easier to view on both computer and in the mobile experience.

And, for the first time, federal and state political boundaries are overlaid on the Outage Map to offer public officials, civic leaders and their constituents quick reference points to orient them to trouble spots and their relationship to their communities’ problems.

“The new Outage Map represents a strong step forward in O&R’s ability to communicate more detailed outage information to our customers, our emergency services allies and our public service partners,” said O&R President and CEO Robert Sanchez.

These changes were implemented in coordination with additional updates to Con Edison’s Outage Map. Both maps were enhanced to improve reliability and provide a more user-friendly experience based on feedback from customers.

Orange and Rockland Utilities, Inc. (O&R) is a wholly owned subsidiary of Consolidated Edison, Inc., one of the nation’s largest investor-owned energy companies. O&R is a regulated utility that provides electric service to approximately 300,000 customers in southeastern New York State (where its franchise name is Orange & Rockland) and northern New Jersey (where it’s Rockland Electric Company), and natural gas service to approximately 130,000 customers in New York.
