Rockland Electric to Temporarily Re-Route Norwood Traffic

Rockland Electric Company will be temporarily re-routing traffic to perform underground electric system upgrades in Norwood on Broad Street beginning Tuesday, May 26 - Monday, June 1; and on Blanch Avenue Tuesday, June 2 - Monday, June 8, as a key part of the utility company’s ongoing $28-million, two-year, electric system improvement project.

The project is designed to enhance electric service reliability, accommodate increased load growth and further protect the electric system from storms for approximately 14,000 Rockland Electric Company customers in 10 communities: Closter, Norwood, Old Tappan, Northvale, Cresskill, Demarest, Harrington Park, Alpine, Haworth and Rockleigh.

Traffic will be re-routed around this electric upgrade work so that it may proceed safely. The Borough of Norwood Police Department will assist with traffic control. Work will take place, weather permitting, daily from 8:00 am until 4:30 pm. There will be no work on Sunday, May 31 or Sunday, June 7. There also will be no work on Memorial Day, Monday, May 25.

For the Broad Street worksite: on May 26, both lanes of Broad Street will be closed at the Broadway intersection. Traffic will be re-routed east on Broadway to Tappan Road and then to Blanch Avenue to access local Broad Street traffic from the Blanch Avenue intersection.

In order to safely access and work on the underground electric upgrade, both lanes need to be closed at the Broadway side only on Broad Street. All local traffic will be able to enter all business establishments on Broad St. from Blanch Avenue. Broad Street will be re-opened to traffic at the end of each workday.

For the Blanch Avenue worksite: on June 2, the underground electric upgrade work will begin between the railroad tracks and Tappan Road. The westbound lane of Blanch Avenue from Tappan Road to Valley Place will be closed. The eastbound traffic lane of Blanch Avenue will be open. Traffic will be re-routed north on Tappan Road to Broadway. The lane will be re-opened at the end of each workday.

This underground electric upgrade work is in addition to the on-going boring work on Blanch Avenue that has been in progress since February 11 and is expected to be completed by July 3. The underground electric upgrade work is being conducted by separate contractor crews.
