Gas Meter Exchange Program

New York State law requires that Orange & Rockland periodically remove, replace, and test a sampling of natural gas meters in our service territory.

Did you receive a notification from us about exchanging your natural gas meter soon?

Our company’s natural gas meters are accurate and reliable. To ensure they continue to meet high operating standards, we need to remove, replace and test a sampling of gas meters. This is required, annually, by the New York State Public Service Commission (PSC)*.

If your gas meter is selected for an exchange, you will receive a series of notification attempts from us to schedule an appointment. This meter exchange is performed at no charge to you and should take approximately 45-60 minutes.

Because this is required by law, if you do not book an appointment, you should expect an unscheduled visit from an O&R gas technician. Failure to schedule an appointment may lead to an interruption of your gas service until this work is completed.

If someone arrives at your property unexpectedly for a gas meter exchange, you can always ask to see their photo ID and call us to confirm their identity at 1-833-460-7059.

What to Expect on the Day of Your Exchange

  • We will come to your door and let you know we are going to begin the meter exchange.
  • We will temporarily and safely shut off the gas service to complete the meter exchange.
  • When the exchange is completed, we will turn your gas back on and re-light the pilot lights of your gas appliances.
  • For safety reasons, an adult over the age of 18 will need to be home to grant access to exchange an indoor gas meter (if applicable) and/or to relight gas appliances.
  • You will need to restrain all pets prior to the technician's arrival and for the duration of the appointment.
  • We will need clear and safe access to your gas meter and appliances.
  • We’ll inspect your appliances before the exchange and after while relighting to make sure everything is working safely and explain anything that may require your contractor’s repair.
