Energy Storage FAQs

For Residential customers, energy storage can provide back-up power during an outage. It may not be able to power your entire house, yet, but may serve critical loads such as refrigeration, heating, and lighting. For Commercial and Industrial and Time Of Use customers, energy storage can provide bill savings.

Typical systems generate noise on par with HVAC systems.

Residential and commercial battery systems range from three feet wide by 4 feet tall by a half a foot deep to the size of a refrigerator, to multiple refrigerators side by side. Utility batteries range from the size of a tractor trailer container, to multiple tractor trailer containers side by side.

Battery technology has exponentially evolved over the last 20 years. These accomplishments could not have come to fruition without an accompanying level of safety. Energy storage systems are housed in steel containers. They are outfitted with a Battery Management System (BMS) which plays a key role in identifying a problem before it becomes an emergency. These systems closely monitor the health of each module in terms of voltage, amperage, state of charge and temperature. Once the BMS detects something unusual, the BMS isolates the troubled battery module. In addition, each energy storage container is designed with a comprehensive fire detection / suppression system that communicates any alarms to a 24/7 central station monitoring company that links with the local emergency services community via 911.
