O&R to Deliver 2 New, Huge Substation Units Wednesday

Orange & Rockland plans to deliver two new electrical transformers – both weighing over 200 tons each – to its Ramapo substation in Hillburn on Wednesday, February 27.

These two units, which cost a total of $5.7 million, are critical for the reliable and economic operation of O&R’s electric transmission system.

The two units, which were custom-made in the Netherlands, were shipped from Flanders, Belgium to Port Newark. From there, they were transported by rail to a siding adjacent to the municipal parking lot on Hallet Place in downtown Suffern. They are being off-loaded onto two specially-designed 105-feet-long, hydraulic flatbed trucks for the four-mile trip to O&R’s Ramapo substation on Torne Valley Road in Hillburn.

The dimensions of the two units are: 414,500 pounds; 33 feet, 6 inches long; 10 feet, 10 inches wide; 15 feet, 7 inches high.

All local permits are in place and municipal and law enforcement notifications have been made. The move will be made weather permitting.

Motorists are advised to expect some traffic delays in the immediate area of the move on Wednesday, Feb 27 about 1 p.m.
