Howells Fire Dept. Promotes 'Call Before You Dig', Wins TV

MIDDLETOWN, NY June 9, 2016 — The Howells Volunteer Fire Department’s sign promoting Dig Safely – NY’s Call Before You Dig underground utilities’ damage prevention program has won the organization a 55-inch flat screen television.

The television, donated by O&R, one of the program’s chief sponsors, was the prize drawn in a sign-posting competition among Orange and Rockland County fire houses, ambulance corps and other community-based organizations that have adjustable message features on their headquarters’ signs.

The friendly rivalry was sponsored by Dig Safely – NY to promote its efforts to reduce damage to underground utility equipment by urging contractors and homeowners to call 811 and request the location of underground utilities before any excavation work is performed.

One toll-free call to the utility notification service at 811 can help to get your project safely underway. The utility notification service contacts member utilities that will mark the location of underground facilities for you at no charge. Please call 811 at least three working days ahead of time. The utility companies will mark the location of their underground facilities using either colored paint or small flags.
