O&R: Suffern Gas Main Replacement Work in Progress
O&R is working on a gas main replacement project in Suffern that will improve service in the village by upgrading its low-pressure natural gas distribution system, which now features cast-iron and bare steel mains, to a high-pressure system, which utilizes high-tech, plastic mains.
The new plastic mains are more resistant to leak-causing corrosion than cast iron or unprotected steel mains. The new, high pressure natural gas system also provides more flexibility to enhance reliable and safe gas distribution system operation.
That $1.6-million project will replace about 4,740 feet of cast-iron main and 460 feet of unprotected steel main with high-tech plastic gas main.
The work will be performed along: Lafayette, Orange and Washington Avenues, Chestnut St., Suffern Pl., Ramapo Ave., West Park Pl. and Meadow Ave. Village leaders have been briefed on the project and its schedule.
Work is being performed between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. On occasion, with proper advance notification, O&R also will work on Saturday afternoon.
Traffic control flaggers, cones and signs are fully deployed for workplace safety.
The gas main replacement is expected to be completed by the end of April. The replacement of the gas services to the buildings in the project area is due to be finished by the end of May.
