O&R Crews Worked Through the Night to Make Storm Repairs; Power Back on for Almost 18,500 Customers Affected, About 85 Still Ou

O&R company and contractor overhead line crews worked through the night last night to restore electric service to the last remaining outages of the approximately 18,500 customers whose power was knocked out by a powerful windstorm that pounded the region Sunday.

About 85 O&R customers were without power at 5:00 a.m. today. O&R estimates that nearly all of those customers should be back in service by noon, or shortly thereafter.

These numbers are as of 4:30 a.m. when this release was prepared. For the most current numbers, use O&R’s Outage Map.

About 40 crews are still in the field working on damage repairs. A handful of the remaining outages require some significant repair. In some cases, rebuilding of electric delivery infrastructure, such as pole lines, may be required before service is restored.

O&R declared a Storm Alert overnight Saturday and mobilized all available company overhead line crews and contractors to make repairs and restore electric service. Damage from the storm began shortly after 5 a.m. Sunday. O&R immediately began to make repairs as damage reports poured in through Sunday morning. The heavy winds began to calm about 11 a.m. and progress picked up on repairs, although damage reports continue to come in.

For safety’s sake, don’t touch or approach any downed wire. Assume it is energized and dangerous. Call O&R immediately toll-free 1-877-434-4100. Depending on the situation, you may also want to call your local police to divert traffic until an O&R crew arrives.
Maintain a distance of at least 50 feet from downed wires and anything they are in contact with including puddles of water and fences. Supervise your children so that they are not in the vicinity and keep pets on a leash or otherwise secure.
If a fallen wire is draped over a car, do not approach the car and make rescue attempts. Remain a safe distance away, and try to keep the occupant of the vehicle calm. If possible, emergency personnel should handle the situation.
Have emergency equipment within reach --- portable radio, flashlights, spare batteries, first aid kit, cell phone and important medications. Keep O&R’s toll-free number 1-877-434-4100 near the phone to report power outages.
