Giant Electric Transformer Arrives at Its New Home

Motorists on Dolson Avenue near O&R’s Operations Center late Tuesday morning experienced some brief traffic delays as O&R wrestled a new, 300,000 pound electric transformer into its driveway.

This device is a 345kV/138kV electric substation transformer which is used to reduce high voltage electricity to lower voltage electricity for delivery to customers. The transformer is 30 feet long, 12 feet wide and 15 feet high. It will be held in reserve to be deployed in the event an active transformer requires emergency replacement.

The transformer was moved from the Bay Crane yard in Carlstadt, N.J. by a heavy-duty, hydraulic, flat-bed trailer truck. The transformer was accompanied by contractor escort vehicles and police and now is being stored in O&R’s equipment yard.
