O&R: Electric Service to 52,000 Due Back Around Midnight; Outage From Equipment Failure

O&R expects to return power by midnight today or shortly thereafter to more than 50,000 O&R electric customers who lost their service as the result of an equipment malfunction at an O&R electric substation in Middletown, N.Y. early this evening.

The equipment malfunction knocked out power to 52,000 customers in large portions of O&R’s service area in Orange and Sullivan counties in New York and Pike County in Pennsylvania.

The outage occurred at approximately 7:30 this evening.

O&R crews responding to the O&R Shoemaker substation in Middletown to restore the outage found that an overhead line failed which resulted in adjacent equipment automatically shutting down as well. The cause of the overhead line failure is not known at this time but a preliminary inspection of the adjacent equipment has not revealed any damage.

All available O&R electric crews were activated and deployed into the field to aid in the restoration effort
