O&R Donates $25,000 to Rockland's People to People
Orange and Rockland Utilities, Inc. today announced it has donated $25,000 to People to People, Rockland’s primary hunger relief organization, to fund a number of initiatives designed to enhance the food security of needy Rocklanders.
For over 25 years, People to People has provided aid to families and individuals who have fallen through the human services support system safety net and are in need of short-term assistance with food, clothing and guidance. In the past year alone, People to People has served more than 14,000 Rockland households.
O&R President and CEO Tim Cawley said, “People to People is the essence of real. It deals with the real problems of real people — not statistics, not abstractions.
He added, “Its work has such a positive impact on the community as it provides food on the table, clothes on the back and dignity to children heading back to school. That’s as real as it gets, and that’s why People to People is so important.”
People to People Executive Director Diane Serratore said, “O&R’s generous donation helps us further stabilize and broaden our organizational and service platform so we can provide help more efficiently and effectively to an ever-growing population in need.”
O&R’s donation principally focuses on People to People’s food pantry services by designating $10,000 of its contribution to fund the Healthy Harvest initiative. That sponsorship provides for the purchase of a new large, energy-efficient walk-in refrigerator to store the Food Pantry’s fresh fruits and vegetables. The refrigerator is at the heart of People to People’s increased efforts to provide more nutritious, healthy food to its consumers.
Another $5,000 of the donation goes to provide packages of food on the weekend to low-income children who participate in after-school activities at the Nyack Center and the Haverstraw Center. These packages of healthy juice beverages and snacks are distributed once a week to nearly 200 children.
People to People’s Back to School with Dignity program received $5,000 of the donation, which it added to a previous $3,000 donation for the program this year. That program purchases backpacks and school supplies for 500 children of low-income parents who come to People to People every month for food.
The balance of O&R’s contribution goes to help support People to People’s overall operations and the administration of programs that provide packages of food to nearly 4,000 families and individuals each month.
