O&R Sending Crews to Help L.I. Restore Power
Sixteen O&R overhead electric linemen, along with supervision, are headed to Long Island this afternoon as part of a Consolidated Edison, Inc. (CEI) effort to render mutual assistance to its neighbor, the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) and its electric system operating company PSEG-LI.
LIPA/PSEG-LI was struck before dawn this morning by a number of unusually destructive thunderstorms storms, packing heavy rain, severe lightning and high winds that uprooted trees, tore down wires and knocked down poles, leaving over 40,000 customers without power at the storm’s peak.
At 1:00 p.m. today, PSEG-LI’s outage map showed over 30,000 customers still out of service at over 1,000 separate locations. Most of those outages were in Suffolk County. The hardest hit area was Brookhaven with 19,000 customers out.
CEI is loaning its crews at the request of PSEG-LI.
