Danger sign warning of electrical hazardAccidental contact with overhead electric lines can result in substantial damage, serious injury or death. It is important, therefore, to use extreme caution when near overhead power lines.

Important Safety Tips:

  • If using an aluminum extension ladder, check above for power lines before you extend it upward.
  • When working on a roof, which may put you close to an overhead power line, avoid standing up and accidentally touching a line with your head or shoulder.
  • If you're moving antennas, metal gutters or other long metal objects — such as an extendable skimmer pole by your pool or a long-handled tree pruning instrument — ensure they stay away from power lines.
  • Never attempt to move an object (mylar balloon, kite, model airplane, etc.) from a power line yourself. Never climb the pole. Call O&R for assistance.
  • If you see a downed power line, immediately call O&R's toll-free number 1-877-434-4100 to report it. Don't touch the line or anything that is in contact with the line. Don't attempt to move the line. Keep others away.
  • When house painting, ensure that nothing, including you, your ladder, paintbrush or roller, comes in contact with the connection brackets or the power line supplying electricity to your home.

Developers, contractors, equipment operators and anyone else intending to work near our overhead electric lines need to check O&R's Field Safety Guide for such requirements as submitting a Work Clearance Request to O&R, as well as various compliance actions imposed by local, state and federal authorities.
