I missed your meter reader. How do I read my own
meter?
If
you received a card informing you that "Our Meter Reader Missed
You", you can avoid an estimated bill by submitting your meter
reading to us within 24 hours of our meter reader's visit.
Some electric and gas meters have digital registers. These meters are the easiest to
read. You simply read the numbers exactly as they appear. However, most electric and
gas meters have dials.

There are 3 rules in reading meters with dials:
- Always read and record meter readings from right to left.
- Always record the smaller number when the dial hand is between numbers. The only
time you don't use a lower number is when the hand is between 9 and 0, in which
case read it as a 9.
- If the dial hand is directly on a number, the dial to the right will determine
its reading.
a. If the dial hand on the right is between 0 and 4, record as the hand indicates.
b. If the dial hand on the right is between 7 and 0, record one less than the
hand indicates.
The following is an example of a meter that has 4 dials and uses the
3 rules for meter reading:
- Starting on the far right, the first dial is between 0 and 1, so we record 0.
- The next dial is on the 2, so we need to apply Rule 3 and look at the dial to
its right. This hand is between 0 and 4 so we record as the hand indicates, which
is 2.
- The next dial is between numbers. Remember to check which way the hand is going
and record the smaller number, except when the number is between 9 and 0. Here
it is 9.
- The next dial appears to be on the 4 so we apply Rule 3 and look at the dial on
the right. This dial hand is between 7 and 0 so we record one less than the hand
indicates, which is 3.
- Therefore, the correct reading is 3920.
