O&R's McCready, Doremus Con Edison Award's Top Winners
PEARL RIVER, NY May 9, 2008 — Two O&R employees who have applied their extraordinary 'people skills',
energy and enthusiasm to make things better for their company,
their co-workers, their customers and the communities the
company serves by striving to deliver exceptional service,
have been awarded Consolidated Edison, Inc.'s highest employee
honor, the "Living Our Values" award.
The winners are Stephen G. McCready and Roberta Doremus, both Rockland residents.
Con Edison created the award 16 years ago to recognize and honor the values and work ethic of outstanding
employees who consistently serve as role models. O&R is a wholly owned subsidiary of Consolidated Edison,
Inc. This is the first time that O&R has had two winners in the same year. These awards represent the
seventh and eighth time O&R has won the honor.
The award is given to Con Edison men and women who exemplify the Company's values of service, honesty, concern,
courtesy, teamwork and excellence, said Kevin Burke, Chairman,
President and CEO of Consolidated Edison, Inc.
Steve McCready, 47, is a General Line Supervisor, a post he has held since 2006.
O&R Vice President — Operations James Tarpey said, "Steve brings everything he's got every day to
every thing he does. Whether it's his work for O&R, his coaching kids in the community or his leadership
in charitable giving, his high energy, sharp intellect and
deep commitment are totally engaged and involved. He immerses
himself in life."
Steve, a management employee who, in addition to his regular duties, developed, coordinates and leads O&R's
"Utility Basics " introductory program for administrative
personnel, is a resourceful, creative, effective problem
solver whose "can do" attitude exemplifies the highest performance
goals of the company.
He also feels an obligation to give back to the community through volunteering countless hours for over a
decade to community baseball and basketball programs for
youngsters, judging entries at the annual Rockland Science,
Invention and Technology competition for teens and even plunging
into the icy Hudson River annually for a major mid-winter charity benefit.
Steve also chairs O&R's Community Investment Committee (CIC) which each year awards $100,000 to community
and civic organizations that are committed to making the
community that O&R serves a better place to
live.
Before joining O&R in 1988, Steve worked in sales and marketing. He graduated from St. Thomas Aquinas
College with a summa cum laude Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing. A Rockland resident since1967, he
lives in Tomkins Cove with his wife Jill.
As a General Line Supervisor, Steve, in conjunction with the department's supervisors, oversees the daily
operation and planning for the Overhead and Underground Electric
Operations Department.
Roberta Doremus is a Senior Operations Administrative Coordinator in Eastern Substation Operations,
a post she has held since 1987.
O&R Vice President — Operations James Tarpey said, "Roberta is a terrific example of the outstanding
employees whose outlook, attitude and actions have made O&R such a successful company and such a great
place to work."
He added, "She cares deeply about her work, she looks out for her fellow employees — many of whom
also are her friends, she goes the extra mile for customers
and she actively participates in her community. She is results-focused,
colleague-concerned, customer-sensitive and community-involved."
Roberta, a member of IBEW 503, is highly motivated and always thinking out of the box. She has come up with
several productivity initiatives within her job specifications.
For example, she started an initiative to revise and modernize the weekly callout sheet which, once implemented,
minimized the number of employees who were called out in error.
She has long served as a fire marshal within O&R and she recently also has joined the Company's Your Best
Committee, which selects outstanding employees for Company-wide
recognition of superior job performance.
Roberta also feels an obligation to give back to the community through volunteering countless hours to supporting
fire safety programs throughout Rockland.
She was instrumental in the start-up of the museum at the Rockland County Fire Training Center where citizens
of Rockland County are educated in the history of firefighting.
She is a member of the Tallman Volunteer Fire Department's Ladies Auxiliary, where she has been active for
48 years.
Roberta has been a member of the Rockland County Ladies Auxiliary for 41 years and is the secretary treasurer
of the Tallman Fire District Board of Fire Commissioners.
She has served in many offices including president of that group.
Roberta also is past president of the Rockland County Fire
District Association.
Before joining O&R in 1973, Roberta worked at Avon Products and Pine Knoll Nurseries. She grew up in Monsey
and attended Spring Valley High School.
She lives in Tallman with her husband George. They have a daughter, Doreen Zarcone, and a son, Robert, who
is a supervisor in O&R's Overhead Line Department. Roberta and her husband also have three grandchildren:
Robert Doremus Jr., and Dominick and Gina Marie Zarcone.
